New! A review of Shannon Hale's The Goose Girl by new crewmember Genesse! She says it's a story of both courage and justice - two things the world can always use more of. Read all about it here!
When I was a young pirate lass, sailing the high seas, rereading The Lord of the Rings, and wondering why my history teacher thought Leonardo da Vinci painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, I sometimes mentioned to my old piratey dad that I was tired of working so hard. Math, English, biology, chemistry, Sailor's Ed, not to mention a couple of clubs and sports, and it all got to be too much. "You're too young to be tired!" my old piratey dad would say on these occasions. (My old piratey dad was a bit of a grouch.)
But fortunately, the world does not agree with my old piratey dad. It has the institution we know as Spring Break. And it's that time again!
So take a break! Whether you're in school or out of it, enjoy the weather (or think hopeful thoughts that it will get warm soon) and relax with one of the amazing reads brought to you by our intrepid crew!
New salt Abigail Van Buren (Not That Abigail Van Buren) brings us a review of Gilda Joyce, Psychic Investigator. Abigail says that psychic detective Gilda is "bold and funny," but I notice that she's also written here on her review, "Warning: Do not read late at night!" If you dare to check this one out, see her review here!
What would happen if the writer of The OC wrote a comic book about the tribulations of teenage superheroes? You don't have to wonder, because he did. It's Young Avengers Volume 1: Sidekicks, and John Carter McKnight says "If a bunch of real high schoolers got superpowers and had something to prove, they’d sound and act just like Iron Lad, Hulkling and Stature." If you're as intrigued as I am, see the rest of John's review here!
I've been relaxing with some fast-paced adventure and a tough new heroine: Beka Cooper, of Tamora Pierce's new book Beka Cooper: Terrier. Beka is a rookie cop in a tough city, trying to protect the innocent from the criminals, with just her instincts and her partners - and some magic - on her side. Read more about it here!
